Established in 1911
The Speer Hall was established with $5,000 donated by Mrs. M. L. Sterns to commemorate her deceased sister Jennie Speer. Gable was placed above the central gate porch to stress frontality, and stringcourse was used to decorate the space between 1st and 2nd floor. Long vertical windows are installed in repetition. This building is unique in that grey bricks were used in construction instead of red bricks, which were typical materials of the time. It is Protestant stronghold in Gwangju area and the oldest building in Speer Memorial School for Girls, regarded as cradle of women’s education.
