<Ujeoseonwon Confucian Academy> was founded in the 26th year of King Injo's reign(1648) to the memory of the studies and virtues of Jo Heon(趙憲, 1544-1592), a litterati official and scholar of the late Joseon Dynasty, who served as a leader of the Righteous Army during the Japanese Invasion of Korea. The title was given a signboard(inscribed with the name of the king, Sadang, Seowon etc.) by the request of Song Jungil(宋浚吉) in the first year of King Sukjong's reign(1675). Since the reconstruction in the 34th year of King Sunjo's reign(1834), despite the abolition order of confucian academy by the Grand Internal Prince Heungseon in the 8th year of King Gojong' sreign(1871), it remained intact. And a full-scale renovation was carried out over three years from 1973. As a pupil of Yi I(李珥) and Seonghon(成渾), Jo Heon raised the Righteous Army in Okcheon and made a contribution, and collected 1,700 Righteous armies to recapture Cheongju Fortress along with Yeonggyu(靈圭)'s monk soldiers(僧軍). Afterwards, he fought a battle in Geumsan against the Japanese army and was killed in action.
The buildings within Seowon include Outer three gates, Dongjae, Seojae, auditorium, Inner three gates, and Shrine, while on the right-hand side of the Shrine is the Memorial stone of Jo Heon(趙憲先生遺墟追慕碑) and Monument house, which were built in the ninth year of Gwanghaegun's reign(1617). The shrine is three sections on the front and two sections on the side, and the roof is a double-eaves gabled roof shaped like a human being as Chinese character when viewed from the side. The auditorium is four sections in front and two sections in side and the roof is an octagonal roof shaped like number eight in Chinese characters from the side. There are four sections in the center, two Ondol rooms on the left and right sides of Daecheong, and a framed picture called 'Leetaekdang(麗澤堂)' is hung.
