This stele is estimated to have been built in 910 to commemorate Buddhist Monk Pyeonun who founded Anbongsa Temple in Seonju, and was a disciple of the Highest Monk Hongcheok. This stele is noteworthy not only for its unique shape, but also its great value in historic and historical records pespective, because of the inscription of Jeonggae Year 10, which tells that it was founded in the era of King Gyeonhwon in the Hubaekje period. Erected right upon Buddhist Monk Pyeonun’s entry to Nirvana, it is an important historical material that allows us to examine the changes of the steles in the early 10th century.
