‘Goryeo Capital Gaesung Palace Manwoldae’ Academic Symposium Held – on November 15th, Friday at Korea University International Studies Hall -

National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (NRICH) under Cultural Heritage Administration (Director General, Choi Jong-Deuk), Inter-Korea Historian Association (Chair, Hong Soon-kwon), the Society for Studies of Korean History (President, Han Cheol-ho) will co-host ‘Goryeo Capital Gaesung Gungsung Manwoldae’ Academic Symposium at Korea University International Studies Hall on November 15th, Friday from 9:30 am to 17:30 pm.

 

The symposium is held in connection with the exhibition ‘Gaesung Manwoldae, Twelve Years of Excavation’(Nov 8.~28./Deoksugung Seonwonjeon site) to showcase the results of the joint excavation of Gaesung Manwoldae between South and North Korea which has continued to its 8th excavation since 2007 to 2018.

 

The symposium consists of one keynote lecture, 6 topical presentations and a discussion. In the 1st sesssion, it will start with the keynote lecture from Professor Choi Kwang-Sik of Korea University on ‘The Outcomes and Issues of Gasung Manwoldae Excavation’ and watching a video on the outcomes of the joint excavation.

 

In the 2nd session, as part of the topic of ‘The Structure of Gaesung the Goryeo Capital and its Historical Value’, ‘Cultural Heritage of Goryeo Gaegyoung and the Changes in Preservation Policy (Lee Sang-Jun, NRICH)’, ‘The Structure of the Capital City Gaegyoung of Goryeo and its Palace (Kim Chang-Hyun, Korea University)’ will be presented.

 

In the 3rd session, it will focus on ‘the Outcomes of Gungsung Manwoldae excavation’. Through not only the presentation on ‘The Results and Prospects of the Study on Gaesung the Goryeo Gungsung (Choi Eun-Kyung, NRICH)’ but from professionals of different fields it will bring understanding in ‘The Spacial Configuration of Goryeo Royal Place and Reconsideration of the Placements of Main Buildings (Nam Chang-Keun, Inter-Korea Historian Association)’, ‘The Types and Characteristics of Celadon Excavated from Gaesung Manwoldae (Park Ji-Young, NRICH)’, ‘The Value of Metal Movable Types Excavated from Gaesung Manwoldae (Yoo Boo-Hyeon, Daejin University)’.

 

The 4th session will be a discussion on ‘Preservation of the Cultural Heritage of Gaesung and South-North Korea Exchange and Cooperation’ with Professor Ahn Byung-Woo of Hansin University as chair to share various opinion on the topic.

 

This symposium is open to the public and anyone interested can attend.

 

NRICH expects the event will bring deeper understanding in Gaesung Manwoldae South and North Korea joint excavation, which continued from 2007 despite the changes of international relations, and the history and the culture of Goryeo.
