In cooperation with the Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies, the Cultural Heritage Administration is offering public lectures at Jibokjae Hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace in an effort to raise awareness of ideas related to the humanities that are embodied in royal culture. Constructed in 1891, Jibokjae Hall served as a library for Emperor Gojong (r. 1863-1907) and a diplomatic space for receiving foreign envoys. The royal library was opened to the public on April 27 of this year after being refurbished as a "palace library." It has been equipped with a wide range of books and decorated with relevant artifacts while maintaining the physical conditions of both the interior and exterior. Organized under the Royal Culture at Gojong's Library program, lectures are being offered 12 times this year, with half of them taking place in the summer of 2016 and half in the fall. Heldon every Wednesday from June 15 to July 20 and from September 21 to October 26, each lecture runs one hour starting at 3:00 p.m. and is open free of charge to anyone interested in royal culture (entrance fee to the palace is separate). The public lecture program is expected to reinvigorate the Jibokjae facility as a contemporary cultural space and draw it into the everyday lives of the Korean public. The CHA will carry on with its efforts to create diverse cultural and historical contents able to capture public interest and encourage participation in the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage.
