Co-hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the 6th International Conference of Experts on the Return of Cultural Property, which took place in Gyeongju from October 17-19, was successfully closed. The Conference brought together experts and civil society activists from various countries, and concluded with the adoption of ‘the Gyeongju Recommendation’ which contains ways to prevent cultural property from being stolen and illegally taken out of the country of origin, to share relevant information and to seek effective ways to repatriate cultural heritage through international cooperation. At the Conference, the participants had the opportunity to share their knowledge and experiences regarding the fight against illicit trafficking and repatriation of cultural property as they engaged in lively discussions with the audience, and also agreed that public and private organizations including museums and religious groups, as well as the general public and local communities, have ever-increasing roles to play in the fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural property. The Cultural Heritage Administration will make its utmost efforts to promote exchanges and cooperation among experts and civil society activists in an effort to prevent the illicit trafficking of cultural property and facilitate effective repatriation.
