Experts on Conservation and Repairing of Architectural Heritage to Gather in Daejeon, Korea

Hosting the2022 Stone·Wood·Earth–ISCARSAH International Expert Workshop - Scientific Seminar


The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage of the Cultural Heritage Administration (hereafter NRICH; General Director Kim Yeonsoo) will be holding the “2022 Stone·Wood·Earth–ISCARSAH International Expert Workshop- Scientific Seminar” at Lotte City Hotel Daejeon from August 30th to 31st with experts of conservation and repairing of architectural heritage from home and abroad.

This aforementioned international workshop is hosted by the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) and is organized by NRICH, ICOMOS Korea and Korea Foundation for the Traditional Architecture and Technology (hereafter KOFTA).  The conference will begin by the pre-event scheduled on August 29th following with the scientific seminars on the 30th to 31st and on-site workshops scheduled on September 1st to 2nd at the venues of the historic Mireuksaji temple site in Iksan to modern architectural heritages in Gunsan and Mokpo Korea. The scientific seminar will be opened to public while the on-site workshops will be held as a closed session.

* ISCARSAH(International Scientific Committee on the Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage):  Founded by ICOMOS and is involved in the restoration and care of building heritage as well as sharing related technology and policy.

* ICOMOS(International Council on Monuments and Sites): A global non-governmental organization associated with World Heritage Committee and UNESCO(since 1965) which promotes the conservation and protection of global cultural heritages


Eminent experts from 12 different countries including South Korea, Turkey, United States and Italy will join the scientific seminar, scheduled from August 30th to 31st, to address the conservation and repairing of architectural heritage and will utilize the platform to share the related cases and situations from abroad.

Under the theme of “Principles and Standards for the Conservation and Repairing of Architectural Heritage,” the seminar will begin on the 30th with experts’ presentations. CHOI Jongdeok, a former Director-General of NRICH, will open the floor by giving the keynote address; followed by the thematic presentations of (1) “ISCARSAH Principles of ICOMOS Charter Principles for the Analysis, Conservation and Structural Repairing of Architectural Heritage” by the President of ISCARSAH Görün ARUN; (2) “Cases of Contemporary Issues on the Conservation and Restoration of Heritage Structure” by the former President of ISCARSAH Stephen J. KELLEY; (3) “Revision of the ‘Act on Repair of Cultural Heritage’ and the Meaning of the System of Acts in Korea” by Director CHO Eun-Kyung from Preservation Technology Division of CHA; (4) “Conservation Principles of Architectural Heritage and Repairing” by KANG Hyun, a Senior Research Official of NRICH; and (5) “Research and Application in the Field of Architectural Heritage” by Assistant Director KIM Seungu from KOFTA. The general discussion session joined by the experts from home and abroad will take place right after the thematic presentation sessions.

On the 31st, the second round of presentations and general discussion sessions by the international participants will take place. María Margarita SEGARRA LAGUNES, the former Vice-President of ISCARSAH, will open the second session by giving the keynote speech with the theme of “On the Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritages in the 20th Century.” Following the keynote address, YUN In-Seok, the Chairperson of Modern Heritage Subcommittee of Cultural Heritage Administration Cultural Heritage Committee, and KIM Ki-soo, the Chairperson of Modern and Contemporary Subcommittee of Cultural Heritage Administration Cultural Heritage Repair Technology Committee, will present on the “Issues on the Conservation and Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Architectural Heritage in the 20th Century.” Also under the topic of the “Case Studies of Conservation and Restoration of Modern and Contemporary Architectural Heritage in the 20th,” Mehrdad HEJAZI, the Vice-President of ISCARSAH, will present with focus on the ‘Masonry Structures’; Paulo LOURENÇO, the Vice-President of ISCARSAH, with focus on the ‘Reinforced Concrete Structures’; and Toshikazu HANAZATO, the Vice Chairperson of ICOMOS Japan with focus on the ‘Seismic Reinforcement.’


This scientific seminar aims to hear the voices of experts from home and abroad and collect various global cases and current situations. By the expansion of the global network and deepening the global understanding of international regulations on conservation and repairing of architectural heritages, the seminar will open the floor to review the adaptability of current restoration regulations as well as the environmental factors of modern and contemporary architectural heritage of Korea.


Any individual or organization interested in the architectural heritage conservation and repair is welcome to join the seminar for it will be broadcasted live online through the official YouTube channel of NRICH. The online broadcast will be available in both Korean and English.
