In collaboration with the Asian Civilisations Museum of the Republic of Singapore, the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage holds a special exhibition, Secrets of the Sea: The Tang Shipwreck. This exhibition invites audiences to explore a very special story about the first Arabian shipwreck discovered in Asia. A large 9th-century Arab trading vessel departed from the international port of Guangzhou in Tang Dynasty (618-907) sunk in the waters of Java off the coast of the small Indonesian island of Belitung. In 1998, a diver hunting sea cucumber happened to spot a mound of Chinese ceramics. After two excavations, some 67,000 valuable objects including Chinese ceramics and gold and silver dishes were found. This was the greatest accomplishment in the Southeast Asian underwater archaeology history of the 20th century. The exhibition will last until March 17, 2019 at the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do. For further information, please visit www.seamuse.go.kr
