How many Korean cultural properties are located overseas? And where are they?

  • Korean cultural properties that were taken abroad are mostly held in national, public or private museums or galleries in several countries including Japan and the United States. In addition, it is assumed that there are still numerous undisclosed cultural properties in the hands of individual collectors.
  • According to on-site inspection results and media reports, as of June 2004, it was estimated that a total of 74,177 items were held in 20 countries. As further investigation is under way, more accurate information about Korean cultural properties in foreign countries is expected to be available.
