What should I do to visit Dokdo Island?
What should I do to visit Dokdo Island?
  • It is prohibited to enter or stay at Dokdo Island (Natural Monument No. 336) unless there is a special reason to visit the island, such as performing national administrative duties or academic research, or fishermen’s escape or preparation of operations. One who wants to visit the island should submit a written application in advance to the Ulleung-gun office and obtain its approval. Permission and approval agencies are varied, according to the purpose of visit, in order to, among others, reduce the time for handling civil appeals. But the access to the island is limited between April and June, the breeding season for marine algae.
  • For the purpose of academic research and others, the approval of the Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do is needed. (When the number of visitors exceeds 30, the governor should take advice from the Administrator of the Cultural Heritage Administration.)
  • In the case of lodging in the island, the permission from the Administrator of the Cultural Heritage Administration is needed.
  • In the case of fishermen’s escape or preparation of operations, the approval of the Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do is needed. (Conditions are added, as long as cultural heritage is not affected.)
  • In the case of fishermen’s escape or others due to military drills, distress relief, or a natural disaster, post notification is allowed.
  • For the purpose of performing national administrative duties by a public officer of the central and local governments, consultation with the Ulleung-gun office is needed
