What is the repair of cultural properties and who is qualified for it?

  • The repair of cultural properties refers to all the steps taken to prevent weathered and damaged cultural properties from suffering further damage where actual measurement, repair, restoration, and landscaping works are carried out for the renewal of surrounding environments. In the Cultural Heritage Protection Act, the term “repair” is defined as “activities for the maintenance and restoration of State-designated cultural heritage, including actual measurement and designing works for such activities, and measures taken for protecting such cultural heritage from being damaged.”
  • As cultural properties require a high level of knowledge and skills in preserving their original state, only those who have special skills and techniques and registered with the CHA as Cultural Heritage Repair Engineers or Cultural Heritage Repair Technicians or as a Cultural Heritage Repair Business with the governing Si/Do can perform the work. 
  • Cultural heritage repair businesses include: business specializing in maintenance of Korean traditional painting works, business specializing in actual measurement and design works, business specializing in landscaping works, business specializing in sculptures, business specializing in mounting pictures, business specializing in painting, business specializing in gilding, business specializing in copying, business specializing in conservation science, business specializing in plant protection, business specializing in actual measurement and supervision, and business specializing in production of specimens, stuffed or processed otherwise. Any person who intends to engage in cultural heritage repair business shall satisfy the requirements for technical ability and qualification, and complete the registration with the governing mayor/Do governor.
