What is the job of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage?

  • The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage was established in 1961 as a national research body affiliated with the CHA with the goal of performing academic research of cultural properties for the succession of Korean traditional culture, collecting basic resources required for research and historical investigation, and developing technologies for scientific preservation of cultural properties. 
  • Its research divisions and key projects are:
  • the Research Division of Archaeology excavating important cultural relics in Korea, carrying out academic investigation on buried cultural properties, and performing international academic exchange projects;
  • the Research Division of Artistic Heritage performing investigation on arts, crafts and sculpture, historic literature materials, and overseas cultural properties;
  • the Research Division of Architectural Heritage performing research of architectural and registered cultural properties and developing safety inspection system for them, conducting research on the repair and maintenance of traditional architecture;
  • the Research Division of Intangible Cultural Heritage performing research on the intangible cultural properties in Korea;
  • the Research Division of Conservation Science performing research and development of scientific conservation of excavated cultural properties, various wooden and stone structures, and paper; and
  • the local research institutes located in Gyeongju, Buyeo, Changwon and other places conducting specialized research projects on the cultural spheres of Shilla, Baekje, and Gaya.
