World Heritage

Korean heritage items may be inscribed on the UNESCO list or register under a different name from the one being used in the national designation system.
UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC)
Establishment

An inter-governmental organization set up pursuant to Article 8 of the Convention for the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritages.

Function

Selection of a nation's outstanding heritages having universal values
Organization: 1 president, two vice-presidents, 1 secretary
Member nations of WHC: 21 countries, 6-year tenure ※ Korea was included in the WHC in 1997, and appointed as the vice-presidential country in 1998
Steering committee meeting: Jun. ~ Jul., every year, by delegates of seven members of WHC
General Assembly: every December or at the time of the UNESCO General Assembly
Funding contribution: 1% of a member a nation's contribution to UNESCO
※ Member nations joined in the Convention for the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritages: 156 (South Korea joined as the 102nd member nation and North Korea as the 153rd member nation)
