Jin Seok-jung's House in Hak-dong, Geoje
History :
- It is the largest house in this village that was constructed by requesting a carpenter who resides in Tongyeong in 1947. Jin Seok-jung, who constructed this house, is the grandfather of current owner and he accumulated his wealth from the fishing industry. In late 1950s, Jin focused in politics and served as the Chairman of Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Assembly.
- Below the upper cabinet in anchae (women’s quarters) is a text. The text says “檀紀四千二百八十年丁亥三月十五日甲申巳時上樑,” which confirms that the building was constructed in丁亥年 (1947).
No major repair was performed since the construction. There were a number of partial repairs but the owner does not remember the exact dates or contents of the repair works. The current building did not undergo major interior reform or spatial transformation.
The individual buildings are installed with gambrel roofs, which were made with flat Japanese-style tiles that were produced by baking clay. Small gables on both ends of the roof were finished by piling up red bricks.
The construction of this house took 3 years. Anchae (women’s quarters) was first constructed, and it appears that detached house, storage, main gate, and barn were constructed with time interval.
