This calligraphy is one of autographs left by An Jung-geun (1879-1910). The eight character calligraphy that reads “Wigukheonsin guninbonbun [‘Giving one’s life to his country is a soldier’s duty’]” is in semicursive script and has information including the name, date and place written at the bottom right (Gyeongsulsamwol Yeosunokjung Daehangugin An Jung-geun geunbae [Korean national An Jung-geun, third month of Gyeongsul Year, Lushun Prison’], followed by his signature palm mark, printed in Indian ink. The item is 32.8㎝ by 137㎝. The calligraphy was made for Provost Marshal Chiba Toshichi, who escorted An Jung-geun during his trips back-and-forth between Lushun Prison and the tribunal where he was tried. After the execution of An Jung-geun, Chiba Toshichi left the Japanese army through voluntary separation. At his death, the calligraphy was passed on to his wife, then to his niece. It was donated to the An Jung-geun Commemoration Society on August 23, 1980 and is currently in the collection of the An Jung-geun Memorial Hall. This autograph is valued for insights it offers into the life of An Jung-geun and the history of the Korean independence movement.
