This collection of patriotic songs was compiled and mimeographed in Hawaii in 1916. The songs were composed by setting patriotic poems to the melodies of songs that were popular among the general public. More than 70 songs, including songs about resisting the colonial rule of the homeland, mostly featured Western melodies, but some, such as Banga Taryeong (Miller’s Song), contained Korean traditional folk melodies. It is the oldest existing collection of patriotic songs with musical notes, and is valuable because it conveys Koreans’ yearning for independence and their firm determination to resist the Japanese colonists.
