As a steel girder bridge, Mangyeonggang Railroad Bridge was the second largest after Hangang Railroad Bridge when it was built, although it consisted of piers, abutments, and truss of the ordinary style. The bridge was originally built with timbers by Jeonbuk Light Rail Company, which was founded in 1912 to operate light rail services linking Iri and Jeonju and transport agricultural products of Mangyeong Plain outside Honam Region. With the growing importance of agricultural production in the following decade, the Japanese colonial authority nationalized the bridge in 1927, rebuilding it as a steel bridge the following year for standard rail services. Today, the bridge is regarded as a valuable source of knowledge on the Japanese colonialists’ exploitation of the granary of Honam Region during the early 20th century.
