At the peak of the region’s trade economy, this facility was constructed to connect the port and downtown of Gunsan, which was used as base to exploit the colony by the Japanese Empire. Gunsan Shrine, Sinsa Square (currently Maritime Police Station), town hall, Gunsan municipal clinic, bank’s official residence, and Anguksa Temple (currently Heungcheonsa Temple) were located nearby during the Japanese Occupation, and thus the tunnel was frequently used by many people. During the Korean War, the North Korean army headquarter was located inside this tunnel for security reasons, and the tunnel received aircraft attacks from the United Force.
