This military facility was constructed in the end of Japanese Occupation when Japan faced imminent defeat. It was built in order to perform kamikaze attack using small ships against the United Force’s battleships that would enter the coast. 17 encampments, including ‘一’ form, ‘H’ form and ‘square bracket’ form, were built along the coastal ridge of Songaksan Mountain, located in southeast of Jejudo Island. Jeju locals were forced to construct this facility by penetrating cliffs along the coast. Serving as a vivid witness of Japan’s invasion of Korea, the fortifications show us how a war forces innocent people into gruesome situations and death.
