This house belonged to Yi Byeong-su, the second son of Yi Ik-gu (pen-name: Hangjae, 1838-1912) who established Hwasanuisuk in 1907 to provide technology education such as surveying technique along with traditional education. The main yard is positioned in the center, ‘一’ shaped anchae (women’s quarters) is located to the north, ‘ㄱ’ shaped sarangchae (men's quarters) is located west to anchae, ‘一’ shaped storage is located in front of anchae, and a shrine is located behind sarangchae. Although it follows the architectural format and arrangement regulations for late Joseon Dynasty’s aristocrats, the house also exhibits characteristics of modern Korean-style House including expanded front and back space, expanded internal storage space, and utilization of modern materials.
· This Korean-style House was constructed using traditional methods of early modern era. Arrangement and flat structure of anchae, sarangchae and jungmunchae remain well preserved, exhibiting superior planar structure of the house.
· History – 1910s: Establishment of anchae (women’s quarters) and sarangchae (men's quarters)
- Grand gate used to exist in the south but was demolished. Now, the grand gate of the east provides entrance to the house, and the gate is transformed into Japanese tiles unlike other buildings within the estate.
- Anchae maintains the original ‘ㅡ’ shaped flat structure and exterior in good condition. However, a new bathroom was installed in the back and the kitchen was transformed into a Western one.
- Sarangchae underwent many renovations including hallway installation, expansion of the eaves, and aluminum window and door frame installation for the front hall.
