Hanseong sunbo was a newspaper issued every ten days by the Office of Culture and Information in the Office of Foreign Affairs from October 1883. According to some historians, the characteristics of this newspaper mean that it can be viewed as either an official gazette or a magazine. Hanseong sunbo was published for the purpose of reporting the world situation and introducing the politics, economy, culture and system of advanced countries to the Korean people. However, it ceased publication due to a coup in 1884, and only resumed publication under the new name of Hanseong jubo (Hanseong Weekly) in January 1886. As the first modern newspaper published by the government of Korea, it provides valuable information for studies of the enlightenment movement and press history.
