Among the white storks, the oriental white stork is distributed in Siberia, northeast of China, Japan, and Korea. In particular, it lives in the eastern part of China and Korea in winter. Its body's length is 102cm. The head and entire body are white, with red skin on the edge of the eyes and under the chin. The straight, thick bill and the wing feathers are black, and the legs are red. The white stork lives on the waterside and builds a big, dish-shaped nest with twigs, straw, grass, and clay on top of a tree that is usually 5-20m high. This bird lays 3~4 white eggs between mid-March and May. It eats frogs, loaches, snakes, crawfishes, and insects and grubs up rice roots in winter. The white stork often bred in the entire area of Hwanghae-do and Chungcheongbuk-do in Korea; now, however, it has practically covered its tracks. Finally, this bird lived in Musu-dong, Gwanseong-ri, Saenggeuk-myeon, Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, but no more bird can breed after the male bird died in 1971. Today, there is only one White Stork left in Korea. For that reason, it is designated and conserved as a Natural Monument.
