Erected in 1379 (5th year of the reign of King U of Goryeo), this stupa was built to enshrine the reliquary of a great Buddhist monk named Naong, who was also the “royal preceptor" during the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo. He was the head monk of the Hoeamsa Temple in Yangju, and died in the Silleuksa Temple on his way to Miryang as ordered by the king. His followers chose a propitious site behind the temple to place this stupa. The stupa is erected on a broad, elevated stone foundation and staircases in the front and sides. There is a round altar on the two-tiered base, and the memorial stone itself has the form of a bell. Although there is no decoration on the surfaces of the Memorial Stone, there is a sacred jewel at the top decorated with a flame pattern. This stupa shows the influence of Indian pagodas and is a good example of stone bell-shaped stupas of the late Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392).
