Located at the site of Wollamsa Temple, this stele was erected to cherish the memory of State Preceptor Jingak who founded Wollamsa Temple in the mid-Goryeo period, though the date is not certain. The history since the temple’s foundation has not been recorded or passed on. The name of Jingak was Choe Hye-sim. He passed the state civil examination when he was 24 years old, but following his mother's death, he became a monk. After leading an ascetic life under Master Bojo, he became the prime Master when King Gojong acceded to the throne. In 1234, the 21st year of the reign of King Gojong, he entered Nirvana at 57 years of age. It seems as if the stone turtle is carrying the memorial stone on its back. Supporting the stone, the turtle, stretching out its neck with a bead in its mouth, places its four feet on the ground. It looks strong and realistic. Realistically carved claws and an elaborately detailed head and neck with a well-balanced body distinguish the turtle statue. The body of the stele itself used to be imposing, but now only the bottom portion remains. The surface is so worn that it is hard to recognize the epitaph, which was written by Yi Gyu-bo, a noted writer of the period. It is assumed to have been erected at the time of King Gojong of Goryeo.
