This house was built by Sim Ho-taek, a seventh-generation grandson of Sim Cheo-dae, a wealthy man during the reign of King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776) of the Joseon Dynasty, who is said to have harvested 10,000 sacks of rice from his vast estates. Sim built the house in 1880 after moving from Jigyeong-ri, Pacheon-myeon to Deokcheon-ri, whence his ancestors originated. He named it Songso Sejang, meaning “Hereditary Manor of Songso,” after his pen-name which is written on a sign board. The house is regarded as an auspicious place as its residents enjoyed enormous wealth for nine generations. In the typical style of upper-class Joseon homes in the Gyeongsangbuk-do region, the house has separate spaces for the master, everyday living, and work. Each building has an independent courtyard surrounded by walls. There is a family shrine, where memorial rites were held for ancestors beyond the fourth generation legally recognized by the state, which was necessary for a large extended family.
