Kim Gu (1876-1949) gave this calligraphy to Gregory Henderson (1922-1988) who was a commercial cultural of the Embassy of the United States, Seoul in January, 1949. In the political situation which was against American military government in Korea soon after the 1945 Liberation, Kim Gu gave several autographs to Henderson as gifts who were very much interested in Korean history and culture. The contents of this autograph reflect Kim Gu’s will of desiring the national unification and this has a great value as a historical material. The words on the autograph, saying “Korea-America Goodwill, Equality and Mutual Help” has a special meaning in the diplomatic relations between Korea and America. Henderson stayed in Korea two times from 1948 to 1950 and from 1958 to 1963 with the Korean name of Han Dae-seon who formed a close connection with Korean people in the political, academic and cultural circles. He collected ceramics and rare and precious relics. Mrs. Henderson donated this autograph to the Association of Commemorative Services for Patriot Kim Gu in 2002.
