On Seollal, the Lunar New Year's Day (Feb. 3), the Cultural Heritage Administration will open the royal palaces, Jongmyo Shrine, the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty and Hyeonchungsa Shrine to the public free of charge. Visitors wearing hanbok, the traditional Korean costume, do not have to pay the entrance fee during the whole holidays (from Feb. 2 - 4). On Seollal in Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung Palaces and Jongmyo Shrine, sehwa, or the new year's paintings, will be distributed to visitors (hanbok wearers only, first come first serve basis). During the Joseon Dynasty, the kings bestowed the paintings on vassals wishing their good health and longevity. In Gyeongbokgung and Changgyeonggung Palaces, visitors can learn about how they properly perform saebae, the deep bows for the elderly, and they can perform it by themselves to their parents. Also, a master in Jongmyo ancestral rites, Yi Gi-jeon, will write deokdam, or words of blessing, and give them out to visitors in Jongmyo Shine on Feb. 4. The offices of the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty also have plans to celebrate the festive day with visitors, preparing traditional teas, tteok (rice cake) and folklore souvenirs.
