The Cultural Heritage Administration has submitted applications to UNESCO for inscribing two historic villages of Korea on the World Heritage Tentative List. Naganeupseong Fortress Village in Suncheon City and Oeam Village in Asan City are known for their traditional landscape as an administrative town and a rural village of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The UNESCO Tentative List is a preliminary inventory of sites having potential World Heritage values, requiring complementary research and data to be registered as World Heritage Sites. To be nominated on the WH List, a site is needed to be on the Tentative List more than a year. Naganeupseong is located in Nagan-myeon, Suncheon City of South Jeolla Province, and its fortress surrounding the village, government office and houses inside the village are noted for their outstanding values as a living heritage site. People have lived in the village for generations and it has served as a crucial venue for several intangible cultural heritages such as farmer’s music, communal rituals and the pansori epic chant until today. Oeam Village belongs to Oeam-ri, Asan City, South Chungcheong Province, administratively. The village was naturally created at first, but it developed as a clan village of the Yean Yi family during the Joseon period. The spatial composition and housing in the oval-shaped village located at the low hill of a mountain exhibit how Confucianism, the dominant ideology of Joseon, affected on the formation of a village. The houses in Oeam represent the characteristic features of buildings found in central parts of the Korean Peninsula. The CHA will not save efforts to inscribe the sites on the WH List in the future, fully supporting in-depth research and effective conservation management for the two historic sites.
