International forum on Daegokcheon Petroglyphs to seek World Heritage nomination

The Cultural Heritage Administration and ICOMOS-Korea has co-hosted an international forum on Daegokcheon Stream Petroglyphs located in Ulsan, southern Korea, seeking the ancient rock art’s nomination to UNESCO World Heritage list. The forum held in Gyeongju last Wednesday was attended by both local and international experts including Mounir Bushenaki, special advisor to the Secretary-General of ICCROM, Guo Zhan, vice-president of ICOMOS International, Wang Jianping, president of China Rock Art Society as the panel. The Daegokcheon Stream Petroglyphs is a group of ancient rock art images featuring carved drawings and characters on the surface of 3 km-long rock cliffs in the Daegokcheon stream. The prehistoric rock art is designated as two national treasures, Petroglyphs in Cheonjeon-ri, Ulju (National Treasure no. 147) and Bangudae petroglyphs in Daegok-ri, Ulsan (National Treasure no. 285). The petroglyphs is now on the country’s WH Tentative List from 2010. For a site’s inscription on the WH list, the property concerned is required demonstration of its outstanding universal value. In this regards, the forum discussed the Daegokcheon rock art’s OUV, research and strategies for nomination. For fair and in-depth discussion, it was held with closed doors.
