Three Korean intangible cultural properties Jultagi, Tightrope walking, Taekkyeon, a traditional Korean martial art, and Weaving of Mosi (fine ramie) in the Hansan region all of which the Cultural Heritage Administration submitted to UNESCO for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, were decided to be inscribed on the roaster on November 28 during the 6th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee held in Bali, Indonesia. The inscription on the Representative List ensures the property concerned satisfies the five criteria regulated in the Convention for the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and its Operational Directive, and indicates the state party and its relevant community have made cooperative efforts for safeguarding and effective transmission of the property. Jultagi, or tightrope walking, is a widely known performing art, but unlike those from other parts of the world which mainly focus on executing acrobatic feats, it additionally features witty dialogue between the tightrope walker and an earthbound clown with music accompanied. Taekkyeon is a traditional martial art, distinctive in its fluid, rhythmic dance-like movements to strike or trip up an opponent. It is not only a tool for training bodies and minds but also a medium that embodies traditional Korean thoughts and ideas. Unlike the above two elements, Weaving of Mosi had been recommended to be referred by the Subsidiary Body which examined the nomination in advance, but it also entered the List during the Committee, with complementary information on the Geographical Indication System that successfully persuaded the 23 member states parties for its inscription. Not only was it recognized as a traditional craft for producing texture, it was also understood as a living heritage conducting important social and cultural roles in the community. With these three elements added on the List, Koreas ICH on the UNESCO list has increased to 14.
