To remind young Koreans of the importance and values of World Heritage especially in Korea as well as to encourage them to come up with ideas on conservation of the sites, the Cultural Heritage Administration and UNESCO World Heritage Centre (headquartered in Paris) will co-hold the ‘UNESCO World Heritage Youth Storyboard Competition’ in 2012. The competition starting on January 1 is partly a series of WHC’s events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention adopted in 1972, that gave birth to the idea of UNESCO World Heritage. Contestants should choose one of the ten World Heritage sites in Korea and describe the role of young people in preserving and conserving the site, finding ways to overcome the challenges it faces. To ten final entries selected at the national level, a certificate and prize money of 500,000 won will be awarded by CHA, and among those ten, WHC will select the best three, to which it presents a UNESCO certificate and a medal. The first-prize winning storyboard will be transformed to an animated film by WHC and distributed at the WHC website and through DVDs, especially in Japan where the 40th anniversary ceremony of the Convention is scheduled next year.
