In celebration of the lunar New Year’s Day, the Cultural Heritage Administration will open royal palaces and tombs as well as Jongmyo Shrine free of charge to all visitors on January 23. And those in hanbok (Korean traditional costume) can visit these royal heritage sites without paying fee during the entire holiday period from January 22 to 24. In the palaces (Gyeongbok, Changdeok, Changgyeong, Deoksu palaces) and Jongmyo Shrine as well as Joseon Royal Tombs, Sehwa, or New Year’s Painting, is presented to visitors. The event is modeled on the king’s costume from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) of distributing a painting to his courtiers in celebrating a new year. As the year 2012 is the Year of Dragon according to the Chinese zodiac, this year’s painting for visitors is the copies of Unnyongdo (Painting of Cloud Dragon), which are also found in an interior wall of Sajeongjeon, the king’s office in Gyeongbok Palace. The ceremony of the king’s distribution will be reenacted in Gyeongbok Palace on January 23 at 2 pm. Besides, Hamhwadang and Jipgyeongdang in Gyeongbok Palace and Tongmyeongjeon in Changgyeong Palace will open to the public, allowing people to enter the royal building to pay their respect to their parents with deep bows (sebae). Visitors can enjoy some folk games in the royal tomb sites during the holidays as well.
