 Korea-ASEAN Underwater Cultural Heritage Conservation Experts Gather at One Place


 - KoreaㆍASEAN Underwater Cultural Heritage Conservation Colloquium (Nov. 20, 2023) -


National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage (Director: Seong Bae Kim) under the Cultural Heritage Administration will hold an academic discussion (colloquium*) on Monday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. under the topic of 「Case Study and Current Status of Underwater Cultural Heritage Conservation in KoreaㆍASEAN」.
* Colloquium : An academic discussion session at which presenters freely coordinate opinions with participants after making a presentation.

This ‘KoreaㆍASEAN Underwater Cultural Heritage Conservation Colloquium’ is designed to invite underwater cultural heritage conservation experts in Korea and ASEAN countries to freely discuss research results including the cases, current status and future directions of conservation in each country.

This Colloquium will feature a total of 6 presentations on underwater cultural heritage conservation in Korea, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia in the order of ▲ Preserving the Past Navigating the Current State of Underwater Cultural Heritage Conservation in the Philippines (Rachelle A. Geline, National Museum of the Philippines) ▲ Preserving Thailand's Underwater Cultural Heritage A Dive into Conservation Efforts (Wongsakorn Rahothan, Ministry of Arts and Culture, Thailand) ▲P3. Conservation of Artifacts and the Case Study Using Scientific Methods from the Phanom Surin (Natchaya Pattanasuttirat, Ministry of Arts and Culture, Thailand) ▲ Current status, challenges, and opportunities on underwater cultural heritage conservation in Indonesia (Nia Naelul H. Ridwan, Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Indonesia) ▲ Efforts for Sustainable Conservation and Management of Underwater Cultural Heritage (Seojin, Kim, National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage) ▲Conservation Management of Ancient Ships during Exhibition(Sujin, Seo, National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage)

After the presentation of topics, a ‘colloquium’ will continue as the presenters freely discuss and share various opinions with researchers from each country.

The Cultural Heritage Administration intends to promote cooperation between Korea and ASEAN countries in the area of underwater cultural heritage conservation science and to prepare foundations for experts of the institute to conduct joint research. It is expected to serve as an opportunity for Korea to play a critical role in research leading the area of underwater cultural heritage conservation.
