2021 Online Lecture Series on Understanding

World Heritage Interpretation and Presentation


Lectures on heritage presentation including museums, tourism, and media (8 sessions, Apr-Nov.)



The 2021 Online Lecture Series on Understanding World Heritage Interpretation and Presentationsponsored by the Cultural Heritage Administration (hereinafter CHA), will be held once a month during 15 April – 18 November 2021.

 

The theme of the 2021 Online Lecture Series, hosted by the preparatory office for the International Centre for the Interpretation and Presentation of World Heritage Sites under the auspices of UNESCO (hereinafter the Preparatory Office for WHIPC), is ‘Presentation: Delivering Multiple Values of World Heritage.’ There will be one session every month for eight months (seven lectures with one special discussion in total) between 15 April to 18 November.

* Heritage Interpretation: the process and activity of understanding the meaning and value of heritage based on interpreters’ socio-cultural backgrounds

* Heritage Presentation: the communicative activities delivering those meaning, values, and heritage information

 

The 1st lecture on 15 April is Introduction World Heritage Presentation by Mario Santana, the Secretary-General of ICOMOS, followed by the lectures on World Heritage presentation in museums, tourism, digital technology, visitor-centered presentation, community participation, and media [See Attachment 1].

 

The last 8th section, which will be held in November, is a special dialogue under the theme of Inclusive and Participatory World Heritage Interpretation and Presentation between Neil Silberman, Professor at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst and the first lecturer of 2020 online series, and Mario Santana, the Secretary-General of ICOMOS and the first lecturer of 2021 series.

 

The first lecture of the series consisting of a lecture and Q&A is scheduled for Thursday, 15 April at 10:00 pm KST: a 30-minute lecture and a 15-minute Q&A session. The series will be streamed live on the preparatory office’s YouTube channel and Facebook page and open to all without prior registration. The sessions will be live-streamed in English; the English and Korean subtitles will be provided for the lecture videos to be uploaded to the preparatory office’s YouTube channel after the streaming.

* The streaming time of each session may vary depending on the region of the lecturer’s residence,and it will be notified on the preparatory office’s Facebook page.

 

Following last year, the Online Lecture Series with international heritage professionals is expected to provide an opportunity to understand the meaning and value of World Heritage through various interdisciplinary perspectives on World Heritage Interpretation and Presentation.
