The Cultural Heritage Administration has submitted Upo Wetland, the largest natural wetland of Korea, to UNESCO for nominating the site on the World Heritage Tentative List. The Tentative List for World Heritage is an inventory for properties that have potential values as a World Heritage site. To be qualified for nomination on the World Heritage list, a property is required to be on this preliminary list over one year. Upo Wetland, located in Changnyeong County, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, is home to varied plants and animals including 10 endangered species, serving as an ecological treasure trove with high biodiversity. The wetland’s landscape is also known for its outstanding beauty, which comes from the harmony between humans and nature with seasonal change. The wetland was designated as a Natural Monument (“Swan Habitat”) in 1962 by the government, but it was revoked in 1973 due to the decreasing of the bird’s population. However, the wetland was decided to regain its natural monument status in November this year, in recognition of its biological and ecological values with beautiful landscape. Currently, Korea has 10 nominated sites on the Tentative List.
