Korea Heritage Service unveils Wall paintings of Gyotaejeon Hall at Gyeongbokgung Palace produced in collaboration with Gucci for a limited time

- Two mounted wall painting replicas produced and unveiled with the opening of Gyotaejeon Hall’s daecheong

Gyeongbokgung Palace Management Office(Director Cho, Kyu-Hyeong) of Royal Palaces and Tombs Center at the Korea Heritage Service will unveil replicas of the Gyotaejeon Hall wall paintings for a limited time, beginning December 19. The paintings mark the first collaborative project between Korea Heritage Service and Gucci after the two signed a social contribution agreement for the preservation, management, and utilization of cultural heritage.
The replicas were created through cooperation between Korea Heritage Service and Gucci, with materials selected based on scientific research and analysis of the mounted paintings of flowers and birds as well as monkeys and immortal peaches in the National Museum of Korea collection and opinions gathered from relevant experts in each phase of production. The replica painters, who are licensed national heritage maintenance technicians, completed the works under the principle of replicate as-is, meaning the lost parts of the original were not restored arbitrarily.
Government General of Korea Museum records reveal that the original flowers and birds painting and monkeys and immortal peaches painting were collected from the walls of Gyotaejeon Hall. Images of the affectionate pair of parrots and the loving monkey family of a mother and her babies evoke the royal couple’s happy marriage and the maternal instinct of the queen who resided at Gyotaejeon Hall.
The replicas will be installed facing each other at Gyotaejeon Hall’s daecheong (wood-floored central hall) as removable works in case they should be placed elsewhere based on further research during the interior restoration of the Hall.
Korea Heritage Service will open the previously restricted Gyotaejeon Hall daecheong for a limited time from December 19 to 30, granting special access to the replicated paintings. The space will be open to the public from 12pm to 4pm on all days that the palace is open. No reservations are necessary.
Building on the success of the Gucci Cruise 2024 Fashion Show at Gyeongbokgung Palace in May 2023, Gucci’s ongoing collaboration with the Korea Heritage Service highlights the brand’s broader commitment to enhancing and ensuring the accessibility of historical sites worldwide, while fostering meaningful connections between these iconic locations and their communities.
Through this project, Korea Heritage Service and Gucci hope to highlight the value of Gyotaejeon Hall, which will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its restoration next year, and offer richer experiences to visitors. The two will continue to work closely together in the coming year.
