Geonwolleung Royal Tomb’s Goseok Meets the Public though a Special Exhibition

 - Introduction of the conservation process / Exhibition starts on December 24, 2024-

Royal Palaces and Tombs Center of the Korea Heritage Service (Director Lee Jae-phil) holds a special exhibition New Journey of Goseok (Drum-shaped pedestal) from December 24, 2024 at the East Nine Royal Tombs History Center.

Geonwolleung is the royal tomb of King Taejo (r. 1392-1398), the founder and first ruler of Joseon and was constructed in 1408. The funerary stones including the stone spirit dais and goseok (drum-shaped pedestal) were also made around that time and placed on the tomb premise. One of the five goseok that upholds the stone spirit dais, however, has been severely damaged since an unknown time in history. In 2024, Eastern District Management of the Royal Palaces and Tombs Center performed conservation work on Geonwolleung stone spirit dais and its five goseok with the help of experts and historical references. The damaged original goseok is taken out and replaced with a newly made one. The original goseok will be on exhibit.
The exhibition explains what a stone spirit dais and goseok are and their conservation process. ▲ The definition and structure of the stone spirit dais and goseok of Joseon royal tombs are presented. ▲ In the exhibition, the status of Geonwolleung stone spirit dais and goseok is on display, along with a video of the conservation process, and the actual goseok that has been removed from its position after centuries of faithful service and setting out on a new journey.

The exhibition New Journey of Goseok (Drum-shaped pedestal) is open to the public from December 24, 2024 at the East Nine Royal Tombs History Center, located on the premise of the East Nine Royal Tombs. The center is open from 9:00~17:30 from November through January and 9:00~18:00 from February through October.
* East Nine Royal Tombs are closed every Monday. But if a public holiday or a substitute holiday fall on a Monday, the Royal Tombs will be open and instead be closed the day after the holidays are over.
