I want to know about the characteristics of Korea’s traditional buildings

  • The distinctive feature of traditional Korean buildings is that they were built in harmony with the climate and ethnicity of the country. In particular, they were designed to harmonize with nature and pursue their architectural proportions and beauty without grandiosity or exaggeration in agreement with their surrounding environment.
  • Traditional Korean buildings were made of commonly-used natural materials, such as pine trees, granite and clay, which allowed them to harmonize with nature. This nature-friendly feature can also be seen in the wooden constructions with unworked stone foundations, entasis-style columns and naturally-shaped beams.
  • Nature-friendly traditional Korean buildings have a simple flavor but show unconventional, unique beauty. They also display unity and balance in their style, even though every part of them was not built in accurate proportion.
