Can I take pictures of cultural properties without permission?

  • Pursuant to Article 43 of the Enforcement Decree of the Cultural Heritage Protection Act, anyone who takes pictures of State-designated cultural properties whose availability to the public is restricted, such as Seokguram Grotto, or whose preservation is affected by such actions is required to obtain permission from the Administrator of the Cultural Heritage Administration.
  • In other cases, one should get permission from the mayor/Do governor (except, if such authority is redelegated to the heads of Si/Gun/Gu in accordance with municipal ordinances for cultural properties protection, one should get permission from the heads of redelegated agencies). The same process of permission is applied to taking a rubbed copy or a photo print.
  • The provisions of this article with respect to State-designated cultural properties shall be applied to taking a rubbed copy or a photo print of City/Do-designated cultural properties.
