This scroll was bestowed by Emperor Gojong on Oliver R. Avison, the emperor’s physician, at the end of the nineteenth century during the Korean Empire.
ㅇ The scroll attests to the fact that Oliver R. Avison was King Gojong's doctor at that time and that king and the Korean government recognized the excellence of Western medical practices. It is regarded as a valuable cultural heritage particularly because it was returned to Korea by donation of Avison’s descendants.
