The first issue of Independence Club Magazine, Korea’s first ever magazine, was published on 30 November 1896. Its contents usually included comprehensive information on modern civilizations and scientific knowledge, exhibiting an enlightenment tendency. The bimonthly magazine was published on the 15th and the last day of each month, until it was closed with issue no. 18 in August 1897. As the magazine presented the official opinions of the Independence Club and became a model for many magazines successively published in Korea, the magazine is considered invaluable for studies of the history of Korea’s independence movement and the Korean press.
