Hangae Village in Daesan 1(il)-ri, Wolhang-myeon, Seongju-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, has developed into a historic community of the Seongsan Yi Clan in the 560 years since Yi U settled here in the 15th century. Yi served as Magistrate of Jinju during the reign of King Sejong (r. 1418-1450) of the Joseon Dynasty. Most of the buildings here, including nine provincial cultural heritages, were constructed between the late 18th century and the early 19th century. The overall composition of the village reflects traditional feng shui principles. The homes of upper-class residents and those of commoners are arranged in ways unique to the region.
