Unam Watchtower was built with funds donated by local residents to defend the region during a period of intense confrontation between democracy and communism after the 1945 Liberation of Korea. It is regarded as a valuable historic material that illustrates not only the security issues of those troubled times, but also a phase of disordered social states in Korea’s modern history during which partisans conducted their activities and the police force suppressed the Red Guerrillas.
