Sogeumgang Mountain was originally called Cheonghaksan Mountain until Yulgok, one of the greatest minds in Korean history, inspired by its striking similarities with Geumgangsan Mountain, gave it its current name.
Along with Amisanseong Fortress, where Maui, the last crown prince of Unified Silla, is recorded as having resided more than one thousand years ago, Guryongyeonmot Pond, Bibongpokpo Falls, Mureunggye Valley, Baengmabong Peak, Ongnyudong Valley, Sikdangam Rock, Manmulsang Rocks, and Seonnyeotang Pond form a picturesque backdrop.
Some 129 wild species of plants including pine trees, oriental oak trees, white birch trees, and royal azaleas grow on the mountain, with small bracken ferns being considered the rarest plant. The mountain is also a habitat for a number of near-extinct animals, such as mountain goats, musk deer, and moon bears, as well as for several fish and bird species such as black woodpeckers that are in dire need of protection. Renowned for its beautiful natural landscape, Sogeumgang Mountain forms part of Odaesan National Park.
