Legend has it that Oeam Village, located on a hilly land at the foot of Seolhwasan Mountain, was formed some 500 years ago when the Kang Clan and Mok Clan settled here. When Yi Jeong, who served as a government official during the reign of King Myeongjong of the Joseon Dynasty, moved here, Yean Yi’s Clan began to settle here generation after generation. Since then, with the descendants of Yi Jeong thriving and producing many distinguished figures, the village started to assume the features of a nobility village. After Yi Gan, who was a 6th-generation descendant of Yi Jeong, used "Oeam" as pen-name, the village was also called "Oeam." Today, the original appearance of high-class houses such as Yeongamdaek House in Champandaek House and Songhwadaek House as well as some 50 small and large old thatched-roof houses has been well-preserved. The high-class houses have a wide courtyard and a peculiar garden characteristic of the noble houses of the Joseon Dynasty. The thatched-roof houses have preserved their old style very well. Several alleys formed along stone fences, along with a thick forest surrounding the village, provide a more archaic, scenic view. In particular, since this village has both high-class and middle-class houses and commoners’ houses, it is considered very valuable in studying the formation of village and Korean traditional houses. This house also boasts of a peculiar landscape garden since the water flowing from Seolhwasan Mountain passes through the village and flows to the garden; thus, the whole village has precious value.
