In general, sutra plaques were used to indicate which sutra was in a wood box. Currently, forty-three such plaques are kept at Songgwangsa Temple. The name and number of the sutra are carved on a tag, and the edges of the plaques are decorated with various patterns such as vine and crane designs. They are also embossed with various images including statues of a Bodhisattva, an Arhat, and other figures under the patterns, and are carved with various signs, too. Some plaques are engraved and decorated in a detailed and delicate manner, including representations of a lotus-carved pedestal, a lattice-patterned window, a lotus-flower sign, a miniature house design, and so on. Judging from their delicate and refined sculpting, it is assumed that these sutra plaques were made during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392).
