Kim Whan-ki (1913-1974, pen-name: Suhwa) is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all painters in Korean artistic circles. He was endowed with an experimental spirit and exceptional artistic talent, which earned him a great deal of public recognition. This painting is titled Rondo, a musical term referring to a work or movement consisting of one principal theme that is repeated several times. It was painted in the late 1930s when Kim was committed to producing pure abstract paintings. As its title suggests, the composition of this painting recalls a rhythmical piece of music, and the main images seem to be inspired by the shape of musical instruments such as a grand piano and cello. This abstract painting, of a kind rarely found in Korean modern art, is highly appreciated for its artistic beauty and the painter’s experimental approach.
