The main Buddha Hall of Bongseonsa Temple, Namyangju, was burnt down during the Korean War (1950-1953), and was reconstructed as a reinforced concrete building with multi-bracket sets and a hipped-and-gabled roof. Usually, the main hall of a Buddhist temple bears a wooden tablet inscribed with the name ‘Daeungjeon’, but the main hall of this temple is named ‘Keun Beopdang,’ meaning ‘the main Buddha hall’ in Korean, following the decision of the head monk Unheo. He dedicated himself to translating difficult Buddhist scriptures into Korean in order to allow Buddhists to access the Buddha’s teaching more easily. This hall displays the architectural style of the 1960s and 1970s, which expresses Korean traditional beauty using modern construction materials, and has great value in terms of modern architectural history and Buddhist history in Korea.
