The Record of King Taejo’s Foundation of Balhae covers the foundation of Balhae by Dae Jo-yeong, who led his people after the fall of the Goguryeo Dynasty, including its territory, culture, religion, customs, literature, diplomacy, descendants, etc. The Biography of Myeongnimdap-bu, which was filed together with the Record of King Taejo’s Foundation of Balhae, was designed to instill patriotism in Koreans by selecting Myeongnimdap-bu (67?~179) as a representative patriotic loyalist from among the numerous martial and patriotic figures of Goguryeo who fought for their nation’s independence. Written by Park Eun-sik (1859~1925), the Record of King Taejo’s Foundation of Balhae and the Biography of Myeongnimdap-bu clearly shows the perception of Goguryeo and Balhae of Korean nationalist historians during the period of Japanese colonial rule. It is an important document for studies on the modern history of Korea and the history of Korean independence movements.
