Ugeumchi Pass is the place where the revolutionary peasants’ army of the Donghak Peasant Movement fought for the last time against the allied forces of the Joseon government troops and the Japanese army in 1894. It is at the foot of Gyeonjunsan Mountain between Gongju and Buyeo and is also called “Ugeumjae,” “Ugeumgogae,” and “Biugeumgogae.” The revolutionary peasants’ army of the Donghak Peasant Movement staged a revolt, resisting both the Japanese forces' invasion into Joseon's royal palace, Gyeongbokgung, and Japan's economic exploitation under the banner of anti-feudalism and anti-foreign power in September 1894. The revolutionary peasants’ army was commanded by Jeon Bong-jun. Ugeumchi Pass is a high passage from Gongju to Buyeo. The peasants' army believed that they should occupy the pass to initiate occupation of Gongju. They planned to make Gongju their major stronghold for the extended future battle. Despite their plans, they were completely annihilated in the last battle due to their inferiority in arms, fighting with bamboo swords against the rifles and canons of the allied forces. After the last battle in Ugeumchi, Jeon Bong-jun, who was preparing for another revolt, was arrested and executed in March 1895. His death sealed the failure of the peasants' army's war against the allied forces. To honor the courage of the peasants' army, a memorial tower for the Donghak revolution was erected in 1793. Ugeumchi was designated as a historical site in 1994, 100 years after the fierce battle. Though the peasants’ army's revolution against Japan and anti-feudalism efforts failed, Ugeumchi is remembered as the historical place where the peasants’ army made their last stand against the allied powers under the banner of anti-feudalism and anti-foreign power. Their battle in Ugeumchi is one of the important turning points in Korean modern history.
